From October 15 until the end of November 3, ACS Web Design & SEO ran a Facebook contest for our client, Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop. The results were a successful Facebook contest that provided Fat Nancy's with:

  • a major increase in brand awareness for Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop
  • improved customer loyalty
  • a significant increase in profit opportunities

What Was the Contest

Contestants submitted pictures of themselves and the fish they caught. The ten funniest photos, as determined by picture “Likes,” would advance to the final round, where Fat Nancy’s panelists would select a winner based on which of the top ten was the funniest. Contestants competed to win a Shimano spinning rod and reel combo.

How Did Fat Nancy’s Benefit From A Successful Facebook Contest

The funniest fish photo contest improved performance for Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop on many different levels.

A Bigger, More Interested Facebook Following

Although “Liking” Fat Nancy’s Facebook page was not a contest entry barrier, Fat Nancy’s saw a significant increase in “Likes” for their Facebook page. The increase in Fat Nancy’s page “Likes” is detailed below.

facebook likes over span of content

The beginning of the Fat Nancy’s Facebook contest brought a large increase in page Likes, followed by steady upward movement.

By the contest’s end, Fat Nancy’s had a 20% increase in page “Likes” compared to the day before the contest started.

Why Increasing Facebook “Likes” Matters

35% of people “Like” a Facebook page to participate in a contest, according to industry research. Additionally, people are 51% more likely to buy from a Facebook page they “Like.” This means that Facebook contests, like the one Fat Nancy’s ran, leads to more people who are more likely to buy from your business.

Increasing Brand Awareness

Between contest submissions and contest announcements, Fat Nancy’s  “shared” posts accounted for a 121% increase in shares as compared to a previous period of equal time. A shared post is when a Facebook user reposts something to their profile. For businesses, “sharing” a post is the most desirable form of engagement because it exposes your brand to all the Facebook friends of the person who shared the post. Because of this, shared posts are great for increasing brand awareness, which creates more opportunities to make a sale.

Increasing Profit Opportunities

The Fat Nancy’s Facebook contest drastically increased the number of people who went to the Fat Nancy’s site from their Facebook page. The numbers on this can be seen below.

facebook visits

Fat Nancy’s site saw a large increase in site visitor’s who came from Facebook during the tackle shop’s Facebook contest.

By driving more visits to the Fat Nancy’s site via the Facebook contest, Fat Nancy’s increased their chances of selling to people who otherwise may not have visited their site. Even more promising is the fact that the average person who came from Facebook saw more than one page. This means that people looked around the site, therefore showing interest in what Fat Nancy’s offers. The average time spent on the site and average number of pages people visited was lower, but by a small, insignificant amount.

A Loyal Following Means Loyal Customers

Through the duration of the contest, there were over 4,000 interactions on Fat Nancy’s Facebook page, including likes, comments and shares. A highly engaged following creates more customer loyalty because people are socially interacting through your brand.
